Professional Supervision

One of the key habits of successful people is the development of reflective practice.  They spend time looking carefully at how they operate, what effect they have on colleagues and thinking of ways in which they can get the closest possible alignment between their work performance and their character.

In some professions, especially those that involve significant one-on-one engagement with people, it is a professional norm that they spend regular time with a Professional Supervisor.  This is not their line manager – this involves a different supervisory relationship.  Sometimes a colleague with the same professional qualification will perform this function and in some senses they also provide a form of peer support or mentoring within that profession.

There are times , however, when the use of a Professional Supervisor who is external to your workplace is one of the best ways of seeing things just as they are.  Effective Supervision is experienced as supportive and challenging.  The supervisee grows both professionally and personally.  Supervision is beneficial for trainee and experienced practitioners within the fields of counselling, psychotherapy, ministry, coaching and health professions. Working under supervision in a counselling context, for example, means that a counsellor uses the services of another, more experienced and qualified counsellor to review their counselling practice with clients.  Supervision also considers the ethical and professional development, and often the personal development, of the counsellor.  Supervision is a professional service which encourages the counsellor in the process of self-awareness whilst facilitating self-learning which results in ongoing professionalism.  The supervisor in this relationship, acts as a consultant.
